Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, won the toss on Thursday and decided to put Australia in to bat in an effort to tie the three-match one-day international series in Cairns.
In the second One-Day International in Cairns on Thursday, Adam Zampa pulled up his first five-wicket haul to bowl out New Zealand for 83 and propel Australia to a 113-run victory and grab a 2-0 insurmountable lead in the three-match ODI series.
Despite falling to 44 for five while chasing a score of 233, Australia won the first game of the series by two wickets. All-rounder Cameron Green contributed significantly to that victory with an unbeaten 89 and a 158-run sixth-wicket stand with Alex Carey, but he was sidelined for the second ODI because of soreness two days later.
After he left, Daryl Mitchell was unable to continue for very long, and they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, falling 113 runs short of their 196-run target. The Kiwis' issue was the lack of confidence they showed after losing three early wickets; they are unquestionably a superior batting unit than they were in this match.
New Zealand has been waiting 13 years for that ODI victory against Australia in Australia, and now that they have fallen to yet another defeat, they will have to keep waiting.
In the first ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee series in Cairns, Trent Boult and Matt Henry shone with the ball to hold Australia to 195 for 9. Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc's unbroken partnership of 47 for the final wicket was a plus for the home team.
Thursday, two days after his New Zealanders lost Game 1 by two wickets despite having Australia reeling at 44/5 chasing a victory total of 233, skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and sent the home team in to bat.
The specialist batsmen were once again stymied by New Zealand's bowling assault, but Australia once more saved the innings after falling to 54/5 in the 19th over.
The target was nearly 200 thanks to Smith's 61 off 94 deliveries, his third-slowest half-century in ODI cricket, middle-order contributions from Glenn Maxwell (25), and an unbroken 47-run last-wicket stand between Mitch Starc (38) and Josh Hazlewood (23)
Australia's troubles began in the second over when skipper Aaron Finch was dismissed by Matt Henry (3/33) without scoring a run. Boult had a 4/38 return from his 10 overs.
