The new movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, provides excellent fan service to fans who grew up watching the cartoons and reading the comic books but have since lost touch, despite the fact that Dragon Ball has been a huge franchise that has continued to give fans reasons to keep themselves invested in it. Despite the significant change that this movie is the first in its franchise to be produced mostly using 3D animation, the movie promises to infuse enough nostalgia for one to completely enjoy this adventure. Even while it could take some getting used to, the movie has a fantastic plot that will make you accept it more quickly than you might expect.
Fans have been anticipating Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero's surprisingly innovative approach to its characters for a while, especially when it comes to Gohan. The best thing about this movie is probably that it gives Goku and Vegeta considerably less screen time, and it's for the better since they've been reduced to being a character that has been on the sidelines for the majority of the time. Additionally, the movie does a remarkable job of capturing the link between Piccolo and Gohan by allowing us to see their paternal relationship as well as their relationship with Pan, Gohan's daughter.
A franchise like Dragon Ball has done an excellent job of evolving, so fan expectations have only risen with each new installment. The new movie also follows a similar path, focusing on Gohan's character and introducing a villain with a strong connection to the franchise's past that serves as a huge callback to those who have grown up in the Dragon Ball universe. Dragon Ball Super: Broly showed us a different side of the fan favourite character.
The Red Ribbon Army is once again introduced in the first episode of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Yes, it was the same one that Gohan's biological father Goku had vanquished in the 1980s. Red Pharmaceuticals, now run by Commander Red's son Magenta, is enlisting the brilliant grandson of Gero, Hedo, to help realise his father's ambition to rule the world. Hedo is enlisted by Magenta after escaping from prison; the latter is only concerned with obtaining the funds necessary to set up his experimental lab.
The picture also features the ideal balance of humour and action. from the iconic mid-air battles and lightning blasts of the franchise. Beyond outstanding, Piccolo's demeanor contrasted with the other side during his non-warrior phase is especially lovely to his bond with Pan as he fills the role of her surrogate grandfather instead of Goku. The trust that Piccolo and Gohan have for one another is also brilliantly explored, especially during the crucial combat moments as the former encourages his pupil to reach his full potential.
Despite its novelty, the 3D animation seems to settle after a while as you become absorbed in the plot. The fight scenes, especially the ones involving Cell Max near the end, look extremely amazing. In particular, the lighter exchanges and banter between Piccolo and Gamma 2, who frequently responds with humorous remarks, benefit greatly from the sound effects. Having seen the English dub version, I can say that Zach Aguilar and Zeno Robinson both do excellent work as Gama 2 and Piccolo, respectively. In a stunning comeback, Kyle Herbert voices Gohan.
In order to make this movie a pleasant adventure watch, director Tetsuro Kodama, who previously worked on Dragon Ball Super, successfully bridges the gap for both devoted fans and any new spectator. The aspects that make the plot fascinating include Gohan's reappearance, Magenta, who almost serves as a reminder of what Lex Luthor is like in the DC universe, and Hedo, the Oreo-eating creator of androids. It is fascinating how the 2D animated opening segment of the movie takes us through the past of Goku and the Red Ribbon Army.
