Introduction

Recently, Motorola has had a good selection of phones. The X30 Pro and S30 Pro were presented a few weeks ago in China by the legend of mobile phones. For lack of a better moniker, the "30 series" has now begun to release globally under slightly varied names. The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion, the Moto S30 Pro's global market edition, is one of the initial launches.

Despite its rather convoluted name, the Edge 30 Fusion is pretty clear in what it offers. On paper, it is nothing short of a well-rounded upper mid-ranger, or perhaps even "budget flagship," if that's more up your alley. It has a great 10-bit, HDR10+, 144Hz OLED display front and center, a powerful Dolby Atmos stereo speaker setup, an ex-flagship Snapdragon 888+ chipset, a sizeable 4,400 mAh battery with 68W charging and a 50MP OIS-enabled main camera, backed up by a 32MP selfie with autofocus.

Despite its somewhat confusing name, the Edge 30 Fusion makes its features very plain. On paper, it appears to be nothing less than a well-rounded upper mid-ranger, or maybe even a "cheap flagship," depending on your preferences. A superb 10-bit, HDR10+, 144Hz OLED panel, strong Dolby Atmos stereo speakers, an ex-flagship Snapdragon 888+ CPU, a sizable 4,400 mAh battery with 68W charging, a 50MP primary camera with OIS, and a 32MP selfie camera with autofocus are all featured on this device.

On paper, there is a lot to appreciate about this. Additionally, the Edge 30 Fusion has an undeniably attractive exterior. It has a really elegant exterior with simple yet powerful lines, lots of curves around the large display, and a faux leather finish on the rear that truly pulls the entire design together. The Edge 30 Fusion has a very upscale and respectable appearance, similar to what you may find occupying space on a boardroom table.

Even at first glance, the Moto Edge 30 Fusion isn't ideal and has a few minor flaws. However, looking beautiful in person and on paper is just half the battle. How well everything meshes together is the key question. As we investigate more to learn more, join us on the pages that follow.

Let's examine the retail package first, though, before we go any further.

Unboxing

A substantial, two-piece box is used for shipping the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion. Even without any plastics inside or outside, it performs a superb job of keeping everything in place and safeguarding it during transit. Clearly built from recycled materials, the box. To better portray this idea of an environmentally responsible approach, Motorola even made the decision to either leave its original hue or go for a dye that looks natural. There is a palpable sense of pride in the use of "eco-friendly packaging," which is emblazoned on the side of the box in large font.

The retail packaging for the Edge 30 Fusion is quite luxurious. It contains a Type-C to Type-C USB connector in addition to a surprisingly small 68W PD charger. A lovely, thick, transparent TPU case is also included in the box, allowing you to use the phone worry-free right away. This is further aided by the plastic screen protector that was pre-applied at the manufacturing.

Design

The Edge 30 Fusion has an unquestionably elegant appearance. It is a reasonably sized device that fits snugly in the hand. Its front and back sides are symmetrically curved, which contributes greatly to comfort. The slope is just the right amount of gentle and forceful. It feels as they say, "exactly right."

Despite being rather thin, the center metal frame contains strong chamfers that aid in overall grip.

The Edge 30 Fusion's backside is what actually gives it its overall design vibe, however, it doesn't really jump out because of how understated and elegant it looks. The back is made of imitation leather, which feels wonderful in the hand. A contemporary smartphone is made slightly more remarkable in a vintage sense by the sight and feel of a material other than glass.

Neptune Blue, Cosmic Grey, or Aurora White are the three colors available for the Edge 30 Fusion. The central metal frame on each of the three is also color-matched to the back.

If for some reason you don't like the leather look, the Cosmic Grey and Aurora White versions actually feature glass backs. For further protection, these are manufactured from Gorilla Glass 5.

The Edge 30 Fusion is perhaps the complete antithesis of the "youthful and joyful" aesthetic that we often attribute to certain phone designs. We are compelled to pull out a leather briefcase and don a tie because of the way the leather texture and two-tone camera island blend together with the curve and central frame.

Regarding the camera island, we think Motorola did a great job with the design. It flows beautifully with its various levels, forms, accent rings, and colors.

The front of the phone is equally as covert and understated as the rest. Tucked hidden under the rather thin top bezel, the earpiece is almost undetectable. Which, incidentally, has a sense of order because its size is symmetrical with the one at the bottom. Even in that top bezel, Motorola was able to squeeze proximity and light sensor.

One may argue that because the selfie camera punch hole is located a little lower on the display than on most phones, it is a little more distracting. But it's not something major.

Materials and Quality

The Edge 30 Fusion feels luxurious in addition to having a stylish appearance. The materials all have a high-end appearance and feel, and they fit together perfectly. Although it weighs only 172 grams, there is absolutely no flex in the chassis, and the phone itself feels thick inside with no hollowness. As we've already noted, it feels terrific in the hand thanks in part to its good weight distribution and also to the high-quality materials employed.

A strong metal middle frame is placed between the vegan leather back and the glass front in the three-piece "sandwich" design of the Edge 30 Fusion. The latter is Gorilla Glass 5, which provides great security. On top, a plastic screen protector has already been put. It covers most of the display area reasonably well, but it is a little thick and somewhat out of alignment with the selfie camera on our device. But to its credit, it didn't bother us enough to remove it.

The IP52 ingress protection of the Edge 30 Fusion. The phone is still advertised as being "splash and dust proof" in the typical Motorola way. We did note that the SIM card slot had a visible red rubber gasket when we looked a little closer. This implies that the phone is extremely likely to withstand even a brief immersion in unsalted water, but we wouldn't recommend putting any kind of reliance on that.

Connectivity and Controls

First, let's take a little tour of the Edge 30 Fusion. A power button and volume rocker are located on the right side. These buttons aren't exactly what we were hoping for. They are difficult to press properly and quite thin due to the center frame's narrow contour. They feel "mushy" and have pretty poor tactile sensations. They are also a little low in the vertical plane. Motorola could have and ought to have performed much better. The power button, at least, is tactile and simple to feel.

The location lacks a fingerprint reader. The Edge 30 Fusion has an optical unit hidden beneath the display. It is very dependable and quick. There are no complaints.

The left frame on the phone is naked, except for a few antenna lines.

The upper side of the Edge 30 Fusion is the same. It merely contains a few antenna lines and a secondary noise-canceling microphone. Additionally, there is a text that says "Dolby Atmos," which is unusual for text on phones. Even yet, it's undetectable and doesn't interfere with the overall design's covertness.

The primary bottom-firing speaker is located at the bottom of the phone. The other channel of the hybrid stereo system, which is a typical design today, is controlled by the amplified earpiece. There is also the primary microphone and the SIM tray, which only has space for two nano SIM cards. A 3.5mm connector and an SD card slot are absent from the Edge 30 Fusion.

The Edge 30 Fusion's Type-C port is also located on the bottom frame. Based on the data transfer rates we were able to reach, it appears to just be a USB 2.0 controller, which has a top speed of 480 Mbps. However, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion is ready for compatibility, so you can use Type-C alt mode to connect the phone to a monitor.

Along with a mouse and keyboard, you can use Motorola's unique desktop environment, which you may use on the bigger monitor for enhanced productivity. Naturally, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion also supports USB OTG or Host, allowing you to connect any number of USB devices to it.

The Snapdragon 888+ offers excellent SA/NSA Sub6 5G capability with dual SIM standby in terms of other connectivity. NFC, Bluetooth 5.2 with LE compatibility, and dual-band Wi-Fi 6(ax) are all available locally. Along with GLONASS, BDS, and GALILEO, there is also dual-band GPS with band L5. FM radio is not present.

There is a wide range of sensors on board the Edge 30 Fusion. A stk3acx combination proximity and light sensor are located above the display, to the right of the earpiece, as was already mentioned. A magnetometer and compass combination (mmc56x3x) and an accelerometer and gyroscope combination (icm4x6xx) are also included. For your information, there is no notification LED, which is now standard. However, Motorola offers an on-screen notification interface and an always-on display as a replacement.
