Suzume no Tojimari (transl. "Suzume's Locking Up") Nanoka Hara and Hokuto Matsumura are the stars of the upcoming Japanese animated fantasy adventure film "Suzume's Locking Up," which was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and is being released by Toho. In the movie, Suzume (Hara) teams up with the enigmatic young guy Sta (Matsumura) to stop a string of catastrophes from happening all throughout Japan.

It is Makoto Shinkai's first feature film since Weathering with You, and he also wrote and directed it (2019). Character designs for the movie were created by Masayoshi Tanaka, animation was overseen by Kenichi Tsuchiya, and art was created by Takumi Tanji. Suzume is scheduled for a November 2022 theatrical release in Japan and an early 2023 release elsewhere in the world.
The storyline of Suzume no Tojimari
Suzume, a 17-year-old girl from a small town in Kyushu, meets a wandering young man who says, "I'm looking for a door." She follows him and finds a weathered door amid the mountain ruins as if it were the only item that survived a collapse. Suzume reaches towards the door as though being drawn in by something.Doors start opening one after another in different parts of Japan soon after. The open doors must be shut since disasters are approaching from the opposite side of the doors.
In the area she walked into, the sky appeared to merge all of the time, including the stars, the setting sun, and the morning sky. Suzume's "door-locking journey" starts as she follows the mysterious doors.

Casting
Nanoka Hara was announced as the voice of Suzume Iwato on July 5, 2022. Makoto Shinkai selected her from an audition involving more than 1,700 people. Nanoka Hara has been a fan of Shinkai's works, stating that she could not imagine being the one to share the "unforgettable, heart-shaking sensation" she felt when first seeing one of his films in theaters. On September 6, 2022, Hokuto Matsumura's role as Sōta Munakata was announced. He explained the character as one that "I had never seen in any of the director's works." Therefore, Matsumura gave a voice for Sōta that he "had never heard before," which involved using a slightly lower tone. Makoto Shinkai found his voice to be "impressive" and that it "embodies the character."

Production of Suzume no Tojimari
From January to March 2020, the project was prepared by director Makoto Shinkai and his team. In April, when the Japanese government proclaimed a state of emergency because of the COVID-19 outbreak, they began writing the movie's script. Shinkai claims that the epidemic had a less noticeable impact on the movie's production in an interview with TV Asahi. He added that the movie will have a post-apocalyptic premise, but that "the spirit of the times is irrevocably engraved into the script." After finalizing the script in August, the storyboards were created between September 2020 and December 2021, and the animation production began in April 2021.On December 15, 2021, the movie was formally launched at a press conference. Character designer Masayoshi Tanaka, animation director Kenichi Tsuchiya, and art director Takumi Tanji are all on the film's personnel.
Release of Suzume no Tojimari
On November 11, 2022, Toho will release Suzume no Tojimari in Japan's theatres in both standard and IMAX formats. On November 7, the movie will have an early IMAX showing for qualified viewers who are chosen through a lottery.Crunchyroll, in partnership with Sony Pictures and Wild Bunch International, has accepted the film's global distribution rights outside of Asia and will release it in early 2023.
