Review of Beast Movie
Dr. Nate Samuels, an elderly widower played by Idris Elba, travels to South Africa with his teenage daughters Norah and Meredith (Leah Jeffries and Iyana Halley). When they go on a safari with an old family friend named Martin (Sharlto Copley), they quickly find themselves in a dangerous struggle for survival with a ferocious lion. The vicious lion merely wants to exact revenge for the slaughter of its pride by poachers, so it kills any person that is in its way. Idris Elba has appeared in a number of movies, but in Beast, he does something unusual by facing off against a lion. In this generic yet enjoyable survival thriller, the actor displays his muscles. Beast, which Baltasar Kormákur directed, doesn't try to be anything it isn't. It contains enough action, mystery, and jump scares to keep you on the edge of your seat. The overall execution, though, could have been riskier.
Certainly, the story is compelling. Nate, Norah, and Meredith embark on one of those trips that end up seeming like an arduous family therapy session. Recently, Nate's estranged wife passed away, and he and the daughters are mourning her loss. They consequently take a flight to her native South Africa for therapeutic treatment or whatever. A trail of dead bodies and lion tracks indicate that a man-eating lion is not only on the loose but also has no interest in eating in a safari gone horribly wrong from the start. He seeks retribution from those who wounded his pride.
To be fair towards the lion, he has every right to be angry. His entire family was murdered by poachers, and now he wants to murder everyone he sees. Because the lion's motivations are so obvious and probably even justifiable, you may want to support it rather than Nate. Nate and his family are being hunted by this very large, very furious lion while screaming and racing through the landscape without mobile coverage. They are stranded and need to find a means to survive! Idris engages the vicious beast without assistance from a weapon. And that causes the rush of adrenaline. You won't be able to take your eyes off Idris as he is attacked, roared at, screamed at, and covered in blood. He did, in fact, smack a lion in the face!
Beast, though, is much more. Thank you to Ryan Engle (Rampage, The Commuter) and Jaime Primak Sullivan for crafting such a heartbreaking script. See, the story isn't really about a killer lion; it's also about a grieving father attempting to mend fences with his irate, perplexed, and grieving children. Beast introduces a personal dispute to the discussion.

Although the action scenes are skillfully choreographed, most of the time the movie is a textbook survival thriller. Jump scares abound, as the suspense heightens in intensity. In one of the scenarios, Nate and Norah trawl through cupboards and drawers in search of medical supplies. The front door, which they left open behind them, is passed by them repeatedly. There is a growing sense of tension as light filters through it because it appears as though the lion could enter through those doors at any second. The action lasts long enough for viewers to watch in anticipation. In reality, Beast is full of these kinds of incidents.
Idris Elba receives plenty of screen time in Beast to convince us of his merits. He gives a powerful performance in the movie, and his chemistry with his on-screen daughters is generally strong. Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries both put up excellent performances.
As far as modern Hollywood action movies go, the film's brief length will keep you interested. The plot moves along very smoothly, as you might anticipate. It contains a few surprises and an abrupt conclusion. Overall, Beast is a simple, enjoyable, and captivating film.
